I think that journalists sometimes fall for imposters unwillingly because they want to provide feel-good stories for their audiences and might feel that their story is not as impactful when they highlight the limitations or the downsides of a certain solution. This is why it's important to consider all good and bad sides of a solution, as well as where the solution succeeded and failed.
