Hi students,

Welcome to Module 3 in our course on solutions journalism.

We're heading into the part of the course where we will be reviewing fundamental concepts when choosing a narrative.

At its heart, solutions journalism is just good journalism. That said, solutions stories are often structured differently. In the first video of this module we will go over some key concepts to keep in mind, and emulate.

Reporting a solutions-focused story requires time, resources, and often, a lot of patience. But a good story doesn’t always need words. In this week’s first reading journalist Meera Vijayann outlines 5 simple ways to tell a powerful visual solutions story.

Chibuike Alagboso, Senior Program Manager with Nigeria Health Watch will be speaking with us about applying a systems-thinking approach to solutions journalism, unlocking new possibilities for the community actors involved in the solution.

Transparency is the focus of this module's second reading, “Transparency in journalism is about answering audience questions — both asked and unasked”, by Joy Mayer of Trusting News. We will go over how you can make ‘pulling back the curtain’ part of your day-to-day work.

We will also dive into Heroes V. Characters in unlocking new possibilities for the community actors involved in the solution of social problems, and the narrative tension and other key concepts in story structure.

Thank you and best regards,

Hugo
